Pioneering solar excellence in sunny San Diego

In 2011, native San Diegan Matt Margolin founded Sunline Energy out of a passion for saving people money.

At the time, Sunline Energy was one of only 20 solar installation companies in the area. Flash forward to today, and there are hundreds of installers in the region. Sunline Energy has evolved alongside the explosive growth of the solar industry while managing to maintain excellent customer service as the highest-rated installer in San Diego on Yelp for more than a decade.

Everything needed for solar success, under one roof

Sunline Energy sets itself apart from the hundreds of installers in San Diego by doing everything “under one roof.” Sunline Energy is both a licensed roofing contractor as well as a solar, storage, and electrical contractor—all wrapped into one company. Matt says he “discovered early on that most solar customers that need a roof replacement would much rather deal with one company that can do it all.” Sunline Energy has been offering in-house roofing services for nearly a decade.

The company also has experienced in-house estimators and engineers that allow Sunline Energy to maintain full control of their projects from estimation to design, installation, and inspection. Sunline Energy prides itself on providing “honest energy,” as its tagline suggests, and has the customer testimonials to back it up. It all starts with a thorough, in-person evaluation of the property and the quality of the roof to provide an accurate estimate that meets the customer’s needs. Sunline Energy gives it to their customers straight and goes above and beyond on estimation, construction, and customer service.

Reliability builds credibility

Sunline Energy has been a member of the Enphase Installer Network (EIN) since 2012 and is one of the very few companies to be awarded Platinum Status, the highest level of membership. The EIN is a network of highly experienced installers that have a proven track-record of delivering exceptional homeowner experiences using Enphase products.

According to Matt, Sunline Energy has tried all the inverters on the market. At first, Enphase was Sunline Energy’s preferred inverter supplier because their customers love the robust monitoring application. But over time, Matt says, “we’ve also come to realize that Enphase microinverters are the most reliable of them all.”

For example, the installation pictured above at a home in San Diego was commissioned by Sunline Energy almost nine years ago and is still running strong. This project involved solar with 59 Enphase microinverters, updated roofing, and even pool solar.

Along with a superior warranty, reliability is a huge reason Sunline Energy chooses Enphase microinverters, as it contributes to their reputation as one of the most trusted installers in Southern California.

Maximizing savings for California solar customers

Sunline Energy sees the Enphase Energy System as a key solution for their customers under California’s new net energy metering (NEM) rate structures.

Under NEM 3.0, the time-varying rate of energy motivates homeowners to store excess generated solar and consume it during times of peak demand. In addition, the rate incentivizes homeowners to export energy during high compensation periods. The combination of avoiding grid energy during peak times, and selling energy during certain other peak times, can result in a substantial financial return on investment for homeowners.

The Enphase Energy System can adjust in real time, enabling installers like Sunline Energy to add any size solar system to any size battery system. Most competing batteries have a restriction on solar-to-storage ratios.

The new Enphase Power Control software enables Enphase IQ Batteries to export stored electricity to the grid for economic benefit, maximizing the value of a homeowner’s system under NEM 3.0. It also gives installers more flexibility in system design to build larger systems, avoid costly main panel upgrades, and meet utility and national electrical code (NEC) requirements.

A lot has changed in the solar industry since Sunline Energy first opened its doors. But its mission to design and install superior quality solar and solar-plus-storage systems that deliver maximum long-term value remains the same. With more than 8,000 projects completed to date, Sunline Energy will continue to help homeowners across Southern California make the most of their home energy systems.
