For Installers: Why consumption monitoring is important and how to sell it

Jan 09, 2019

For Installers: Why consumption monitoring is important and how to sell it

In this day and age, to differentiate your business and provide the best customer experience, it is no longer enough to simply install a traditional solar system. Homeowners are clamoring for smart energy solutions where they can gain more visibility into their PV production and energy usage.

Helping homeowners see the light

If a system is installed and configured with the Envoy IQ or the Envoy S Metered with consumption CTs installed, a homeowner is able to monitor his/her energy consumption along with the energy production from the PV system. With MyEnlighten, homeowners have at-a-glance information on energy production, energy consumption and net energy from their system.

Positive net energy indicates that more energy has been produced than consumed and vice versa. The darker shaded areas on the graph indicate net energy measurements; either net production or net consumption.

More Homeowners are showing interest in Consumption Monitoring

According to a customer survey we conducted with over 2,000 homeowners, 57% have shown interest in learning more about consumption monitoring while only 28% have consumption monitoring activated. During our webinars we have also heard homeowners ask questions such as why they were not offered consumption monitoring by the installer or how they can get access to consumption monitoring along with their system.

Better insights to customers = more referrals + add-on sales

Homeowners with consumption monitoring are usually more satisfied with their systems and engaged with Enlighten. New customer acquisition can be difficult and expensive – referrals from your existing customers will allow you to reach out to more homeowners. Having consumption monitoring also helps you to gain insights into your customers energy needs, such as whether they need additional solar in to meet their energy demands, or whether they could benefit from energy storage.

Give yourself a competitive advantage

Our competitors’ consumption solutions are complex and expensive. Installers tell us that the consumption CTs offered by Enphase are straight forward and inexpensive. We suggest that you demo consumption monitoring with homeowners. Once they understand it they will see the value in it and will be willing to pay extra for it. You can include consumption monitoring in your installation price or charge extra for it, if the site installation is complex – it’s up to you! The average add-on sale for including consumption monitoring is between $300 and $450.

Need help? We got you covered!

Join an upcoming webinar about how to install Consumption CTs and why Consumption Monitoring is good for your business. We have a tool, in the Installer Toolkit, called Meter Wizard to walk you through the Consumption CT configuration process to ensure successful installation every time. You can see videos, FAQs, and more about Consumption Monitoring in the support center.

FEMA Recommends Microinverters in Rooftop Solar Advisory

Nov 26, 2018

In the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria last year, FEMA has released a new report to help homeowners and solar professionals protect their solar systems from high velocity winds. The official report, titled Rooftop Solar Panel Attachment: Design, Installation, and Maintenance, provides recommendations on what to do if you’re considering installing a solar system in a hurricane-prone area, as well as steps that current system owners can take to prepare before a hurricane makes landfall.

FEMA recommends microinverters

FEMA provides guidelines on what type of equipment is best suited to withstand powerful winds, recommending microinverters over central and string inverters. Here is FEMA’s official statement on the advantage of microinverters:

We “recommend using microinverters where appropriate. Although these generally cost more than central or string inverters; they have several advantages. Unlike string inverters, microinverters have a greater chance of allowing undamaged panels of a PV array to continue to produce electrical power even if one panel is blown away or damaged by wind-borne debris. In an array using string inverters, if one panel is damaged, all the panels on the string will be offline.”

The report also provides additional recommendations to homeowners who currently own or are planning on installing a solar system in hurricane-prone areas. You can read more about FEMA's recommendations below, as well as check out what an installer in Florida, May Electric Solar, has to say about it:

What to consider before purchasing a solar system

Talk to your installer about anticipated wind loads in your area, and they can help create a system design that best suits your needs. Looking for an installer in your area? Try our Enphase Installer Network.

What to consider if you already have a solar system
FEMA recommends hiring a solar professional to conduct a wind vulnerability assessment to help you identify whether any corrective action needs to be taken to improve your system’s ability to withstand high winds.

How to maintain a solar system in a hurricane-prone area
Do an annual check -- or enlist a solar professional to help you -- to ensure the tightness of your system’s bolted connections using a torque wrench, as well as checking all of the panel clamps and doing spot-checks on bolts that connect rails with clip angles or posts. If this is something you need assistance with, you can contact a local installer to help with the annual maintenance.

How to prepare before a hurricane makes landfall
If a hurricane is headed your direction, prepare your system by removing debris from roof drains and gutters, removing or replacing loose panels, and, if time allows, checking the tightness of the system’s bolted connections.

What to do after a severe wind storm or hurricane
Once the wind storm or hurricane has passed, check your system and your roof covering for any potential damage from wind-borne panels or other debris. If any panels need to be removed, replaced, or temporarily secured, you may want to work with a local installer to help with the repairs. FEMA also recommends again checking the tightness of the system’s bolted connections, although this can be done a few months after the storm passes if necessary.

Four Differentiators That Set Enphase Apart From the Competition

Jun 25, 2018

Four Differentiators That Set Enphase Apart From the Competition

Have you noticed that homeowners are doing more research before going solar? They're taking more time to learn about the technology and understand the equipment that will be going on their roof.

In a recent survey we conducted with homeowners, more than a third said they requested specific brands for their modules and inverters. The conversation is quickly moving from: “I’m interested in solar” to: “I’m interested in solar... but I want to know more about this module vs that module. And, what’s the real difference between these inverter options?

Thankfully, the answers are clear when it comes to the Enphase Home Energy Solution. We've put together some key materials to help you communicate what sets our industry-leading technology apart from the rest of the pack:

  • Enphase Microinverters stand up to extreme heat: They generate less heat than other inverters, protecting internal parts from damage due to extreme heat
  • Enphase technology provides a better value: Our technology produces more energy with lower operations and maintenance costs, which substantially racks up the savings over a system's lifetime
  • Enphase systems include critical consumption monitoring functionality: Unlike some of our competitors, the Enphase solution includes easy-to-install consumption monitoring (one of the features that homeowners find most valuable when purchasing a solar system!)
  • Enphase Microinverters are more reliableEnphase Microinverters have no moving parts, which means improved reliability. In fact, our systems come with the highest environmental durability rating and an industry-leading 25-year warranty

The links above will take you to a series of short topic briefs that will arm you with proven, concise information to use with your customers. You can see the complete list of topic briefs here. We'll be adding new topic briefs in the future, so check back again soon!

Installers: Give Your Customers What They Want With Energy Usage Monitoring

May 30, 2018

Installers: Give Your Customers What They Want With Energy Usage Monitoring

Why home energy tracking matters to your customers

We recently surveyed our homeowners about what features they want from their solar system. While knowing how much energy their panels produce is most important to them, more than half of homeowners said they also want information about how much energy their household consumes. And when asked what additional system components they want to learn more about, consumption monitoring was their #1 answer.

Helping homeowners see the light

As you probably know, when a homeowner gets a new solar system, a common misconception is that they now have unlimited free energy. With this mindset, some homeowners start to use even more energy than they did in the past, leaving lights on around the house and keeping other devices turned on longer. In fact, one of the common questions our customer support team gets is: “We now have this beautiful, high-performing solar array. So why are my energy bills the same as they were before?”

With energy usage monitoring (a.k.a. Consumption Monitoring), homeowners are able to view their home’s energy usage in MyEnlighten. With this valuable data at their fingertips, homeowners can see when they’re using energy that comes from their new system -- and when they’re not. With access to this powerful information, homeowners can make slight modifications to their behaviors (like running the dishwasher during the day and remembering to keep power usage down at night) that can help them keep their energy bills low.

An added bonus: Installing Consumption CTs also prepares the system for installation of the AC Battery, so you can offer your customers the option of adding storage to their system to help offset their night-time energy usage.

How to get started installing Consumption CTs

Enabling Consumption Monitoring on an Enphase system requires the installation of two metering devices (called Consumption CTs) on the main service conductors feeding the site; it also requires that the system have an Envoy-S or IQ Envoy as well. You can see more detailed information about installing Consumption CTs on this technical brief.

Keep in mind that not all sites are compatible with Consumption CT installation, depending on the configuration of the home's electrical panel.

Need help? We’ve got you covered!

Join an upcoming webinar about how to install Consumption CTs and why Consumption Monitoring is good for your business. We’re rolling out the Meter Wizard, a new tool to walk you through the Consumption CT configuration process to ensure successful installation every time. You can see videos, FAQs, and more about Consumption Monitoring in the support center.

Introducing the IQ Combiner+: Solar With Enphase Just Got Simpler (Again)

Dec 14, 2017

Introducing the IQ Combiner+: Solar With Enphase Just Got Simpler (Again)

If you’ve been following Enphase for the past few years, you know that there has always been a big focus on making our products faster and more efficient for our installers. Today’s announcement of our IQ Combiner+™ product should be a reminder that Enphase is still very much working for our valued installers.

A sneak peek into our IQ Combiner+

The IQ Combiner+ consolidates interconnection equipment into a single enclosure. It streamlines PV and storage installations by providing a consistent, pre-wired solution for residential applications. The IQ Combiner+ is the latest product in the Enphase IQ™ Microinverter System, which offers unmatched simplicity, reliability and ease of installation for solar installers.

What else? We included three features that came directly from customer and installer feedback. The IQ Combiner+ allows for larger systems (up to 15.3kWac), it provides the option for four circuits, and now features swappable breakers.

To keep Enphase systems connected to control and analytics platforms, the IQ Combiner+ comes with an Enphase IQ Envoy preinstalled, and is available with all key communications technology options, including Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or cellular. The IQ Combiner+ also features production metering, with the option to add consumption monitoring for plug-and-play storage. That’s a lot of goodies in a single box, and that’s the whole point.

We want to make the solar installation process simple for our installers. Simpler also means faster, which means more installs per day, and we all know what that means. The IQ Combiner+ also makes all new Enphase solar installs ready for storage, which represents the opportunity for an additional revenue stream for installers.
