In California, CALSSA has provided support for and driven Net Energy Metering (NEM), established the California Solar Initiative, streamlined permitting, backed the California Solar Mandate for New Homes, driven $1B in rebates for storage through SGIP, and brought us the Solar for Multi-Family Homes program. This track record is more than impressive.

A 2016 NREL study estimated the total rooftop solar PV potential in the US at 1.1 Terawatts. Enough to produce 39% of the nation’s electric energy needs. Every time I’ve flown in a plane for the last 15 years (since joining the industry), all I see is that potential. Drilling down to the subject at hand, GTM notes the national run rate for all Commercial and Industrial solar installations is about 2GW per year. Of this, 27% or 540MW, are projects below 250kW.

Backup batteries for solar storage are becoming more and more popular every day. Whether you want to use clean solar energy after dark, or you need to ensure you’ll stay powered during a blackout, a solar battery is the perfect solution.

But a lot of people wonder about solar storage: are the batteries safe?

In the last article “The Rise of Solar+Storage,”  home energy systems were discussed and how they’re gaining in popularity over solar system installations with no battery storage attached. Currently, about 25% of the installations are for a home energy system, that is, solar and storage combined as a single system.
