ConnectedSolutions Program

Get paid to keep the grid stable.

Participate in the ConnectedSolutions Program and
make money with your Enphase Storage system.

National Grid and Eversource customers will soon be able to reap benefits from their Enphase Storage system. The utilities will pay homeowners to help even out the grid during times of peak power demand.

This grid services program, called ConnectedSolutions, will pay Enphase Storage homeowners who enroll and participate in peak demand events. By participating, you simply allow your Enphase system to export energy to the grid when it needs the most. It’s an easy way for you to earn some extra cash with very little effort. Plus, you keep full functionality of your Enphase Storage system, including backup power.

Key program features

The ConnectedSolutions program has varied incentives, hours, and needs based on the season. Summer season runs from June to September and is expected to have about 30 to 60 “discharge events” per year. Winter season runs from December to March and is expected to have 5 to 15 discharge events. Discharge events occur between 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm Eastern Time.

There's a 5-year incentive lock-in period for qualifying customers. The exact amount you earn depends on your state and utility. You would earn the dollar amount shown in the table below for the average kilowatt (kW) of power capacity that you offer the grid over the course of a season – not per discharge event.

For example, if you have an Encharge 10™ unit with 3.84 kW of power capacity in Rhode Island, you can potentially earn 3.84 x $400. This amounts to $1,536 over the course of the year.

Incentive amounts

State Utility Summer Payment ($/kW) Winter Payment ($/kW)
Massachusetts National Grid $225 $50
Massachusetts Eversource $225 $50
Rhode Island National Grid $400 No winter events
Connecticut Eversource $225 $50
New Hampshire* Eversource $225 No winter events

*Please note: there is limited enrollment capacity in New Hampshire

Frequently asked questions

ConnectedSolutions is a program that allows the utility to pull power from your energy storage system to help stabilize the grid during high demand periods. Enphase is working with utility companies to make the process easy for homeowners so they can earn extra cash while supporting the grid.

Enphase Storage customers in the following utility service territories are eligible:

  • National Grid (Massachusetts and Rhode Island)
  • Eversource (Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire)
Note: Eversource Massachusetts customers served by Cape Light Compact for energy efficiency services are not eligible. And there is limited enrollment capacity in New Hampshire.

You will be able to apply to join the program in the Enlighten app starting in May 2021. Enrolling takes just a few minutes and you will be able to monitor your participation over time by using the app.

You can also contact to your local installer and they will help you understand the process. The Enphase team is also available for support via the form above.

A discharge event occurs when your Enphase Storage system supplies energy to the electric grid during peak power periods. Known as “demand response”, utilities implement these programs to reduce peak power demand, delay costly utility investments, and lower overall electricity costs for the grid. Participating customers are eligible to receive incentives.

ConnectedSolutions is a performance-based program. The money you earn is based on your average power contribution during discharge events. Enphase can manage your system to help maximize your earnings. The highest-earning Enphase Storage systems are paired with solar in order to completely recharge the battery on a daily basis. Some systems can earn as much as $800 per year in Massachusetts and Connecticut or $1,200 per year in Rhode Island. Earnings for the first year will also depend on when you enroll. Credits begin upon enrollment and formal acceptance to the program.

For e.g., consider a customer who has an Enphase System installed in Rhode Island with electricity provider as National Grid. The table below mentions the results of this customer's performance over a summer season that had 3 demand response events over the whole summer. In reality, summer dispatch seasons have many more events (between 30 to 60).

Event Average kW power discharged
Event 1 1 kW
Event 2 2 kW
Event 3 3 kW

The customer's average performance over the summer season would be: The total amount to be paid for this customer for the summer season would be:

Your system can be dispatched up to 75 times per year during peak demand hours (roughly 60 summer days and 15 winter days). During the hottest part of summer, you may expect an event almost every weekday. Enphase will automatically charge the battery for optimal program performance. You can also customize your settings through your Enlighten app

You’ll be notified of upcoming events in the “Grid Services” section of the Enlighten app before events are scheduled, typically by 2 pm EST on the day before. You can opt-out by clicking on the opt-out link for an upcoming event in the Grid Services section of the app. If you opt-out of an event, it may reduce the amount that you earn from the program.

If severe weather is in the forecast, the utilities will not call any discharge events. And you have the added protection of Storm Guard, which will remain active and will prioritize backup in the case of severe weather.

Enphase Storage will also retain at least 10 percent of its capacity during program participation as reserve state of charge. You can also customize your Enphase Storage preferences within your Enlighten app by selecting “Grid Services” from the menu.

Your system’s performance during discharge events will be calculated and approved by your utility at the end of each season (summer and winter). Your utility will then compensate you directly for your contribution for that season. Summer program earnings are typically paid by late December and winter earnings are typically paid by late May. Customers must be enrolled in the program through the end of the season in order to be eligible for that season’s payment.
