Ever heard of a Giraffe powering your electric bike and cars?

Aug 06, 2019

On the Baltic shores in Karlskrona, Sweden is an exciting new landmark – a unique installation of a giraffe shaped hybrid- charging station. Energiraffen, as it is famously called, is a wind and solar powered charging station for electric vehicles. It is  a Karlskrona municipal initiative and  is open for public use.

We congratulate InnoVentum for this radical installation. Giraffe 2.0, their trademark design was released in 2014 at Business of Design Week in Hong Kong. Keeping up the spirit of innovation, this installation was christened ‘Energiraffen’ by 4th graders from a local municipality school.

The new charging station consists of a wooden structure that holds 24 solar panels with Enphase IQ 7 microinverters, and a wind turbine mounted at a height of 12 m. The wooden construction has helped reduce carbon footprint of the installation, making the balance of carbon dioxide 4+ tons CO2 negative – even before any renewable energy is produced.

As Magnus Larsson, Municipal council of Karlskrona says, “It's a good combination in Karlskrona. We have fantastic conditions for such a plant - either the sun is shining, or it is blowing ”. The solar and wind energy generating capability makes it a 24-hour electricity generating machine. The specially designed positioning of the solar panels enables more stable electricity generation and results in higher production both in the morning and evening. The power station is projected to produce between 15,000 kWh and 20,000 kWh annually.
