We often get calls from people inquiring about electric vehicle (EV) charging speeds. They are usually curious about the different kinds of charging speeds and how much time it will take to charge their EV.
With the purchase of an EV, typically you will receive a Level 1 or “trickle” charging station with the vehicle. The Level 1 charging station plugs into a standard 120-volt (V) household outlet. It is a slow charge providing about 4-5 miles of range per hour of charge.
Typically, our customers want to charge faster and choose to purchase a Level 2, or 240 V, charging station. This requires a dedicated 240 V line to the charging station, and there are various power levels (and charging speeds) available from Level 2 charging stations. A Level 2 charging station can provide anywhere from 16 to 60 miles of range per hour of charge, depending on the vehicle that is being charged and the charging station being used.

Every EV has an onboard charger. The onboard charging system is in control of the charge. The charging station is just a safety device and a passthrough for power. When a vehicle is plugged in, the charging station communicates to the car how much available power it has to offer.
