Eversource New Hampshire Clean Energy Fund for Battery Storage Program

Eversource customers in New Hampshire can earn valuable incentives for helping reduce peak demand on the grid.

Get paid to help the grid

When electricity demand is high, Eversource New Hampshire will call demand response events. By participating in these events through the New Hampshire Clean Energy Fund (NHCEF) for Battery Storage Program, customers with Enphase IQ Batteries can send their extra, stored power to the grid to help reduce peak demand and the amount of pollution generated by natural gas plants during peak hours.

In exchange, participants will receive an upfront incentive rebate of $230 per kWh of battery capacity enrolled in the Program, capped at $3,000 per residential account, or $250 per kWh of battery capacity enrolled in the Program, capped at $10,000 per commercial account.

For example, two IQ Battery 5Ps with a useable, enrolled energy capacity of 10 kWh would earn $2,300 for a residential customer, or $2,500 for a commercial customer. See the FAQs below for more details.

Participating customers with Enphase IQ Batteries can expect demand response events no more than 60 times a year, for a maximum of three hours per event, between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. from June through September. Events are typically either two or three hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

All residential and small commercial electricity customers with an interconnected1 Enphase IQ Battery installed after October 1, 2022, and an account in good standing with Eversource New Hampshire can apply for the Program. Note that Program participants must maintain an internet connection (via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular) for the battery storage system at all times.

Interconnected batteries are connected to the internet and the electric grid. Note that Enphase does not support permanently off-grid battery systems and those systems would not be able to participate in this program.

First, your Enphase installer must visit either the Eversource Residential Home Battery Storage Program or Commercial Battery Storage Program webpage and fill out and submit the Eversource NHCEF Reservation of Funds Program Application.

Your installer should use the information in Table 1 and the number of batteries of each model installed to complete the application. For example, if you have two IQ Battery 5Ps installed, your installer would enter 7.68 kW for Maximum Continuous Power and 10.00 kWh for Useable Capacity.

Table 1: Eversource Program Reservation of Funds Application Information

Enphase battery model Maximum continuous power (size of battery system in kW) Useable capacity (size of battery system in kWh)
IQ Battery 5P 3.84 kW 5.00 kWh
IQ Battery 10/10T 3.84 kW 10.08 kWh
IQ Battery 3/3T 1.28 kW 3.36 kWh

Second, after your Reservation of Funds Program Application is accepted, and your Enphase IQ Battery is installed, commissioned, and you have permission to operate (PTO), you will be able to complete your application to enroll in the Program through the Enphase App on your smartphone. The Enphase App is available for download on the App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android.

To complete your application, navigate to the Grid Services section of the Services page in the Enphase App. Then, select your utility provider (i.e., Eversource) and state (i.e., New Hampshire) and click on the Program page to view Program details. Click Sign Up for Free and follow a few short prompts that walk you through the in-app application steps, including:

  1. Complete the Enphase App-based application form.
    • Only key details are required; Enphase will auto-fill known information fields based on your Enphase Account information
    • Please ensure the information you submit matches your utility account information (e.g., utility account holder name, email address)
  2. Review and accept the legal terms and conditions via digital signature.
  3. Submit the application.

Key application steps via the Enphase App are summarized in the screenshots below.

Applications are typically accepted or rejected by the Program administrators (e.g., Eversource) within 5 to 10 business days. If you are accepted by the Program administrator, Enphase will automatically activate your battery to participate in the Program. Note that activations can take 5 to 7 business days or longer to process.

Enphase and other Program sponsors have no liability to any participant for any loss, damage, cost or expense incurred as a result of, or in connection with, participation in the Program. All incentive payments are the responsibility of Eversource. Additional details are provided in the Program Terms and Conditions (T&C) and Participant Agreement available in your Enphase App.

Yes. Unlike other battery suppliers, Enphase ensures that 100% of the upfront incentive, which is the only incentive offered under this Program, goes to the Enphase battery owner.

After enrolling and being accepted and activated into the Program, you can use your Enphase App to monitor each event you participate in. The Enphase App is available for download on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Event monitoring examples via the Enphase App are summarized in the screenshots below.

NHCF1.0

Yes. Enrolled and activated batteries will participate in every demand response event, regardless of which battery operating mode you have selected, unless you choose to opt out of the event.

Your battery system will deliver up to 80% of its energy capacity during every demand response event. In addition, if you have enabled your battery’s Storm Guard feature, Storm Guard will be automatically overridden during all demand response events. Note that Eversource has advised they will not call demand response events before or during major storms that could result in widespread grid power outages.

Also, your battery will be set to Full Backup mode 12 hours before each event start time until each event end time. Your battery mode will revert to the original settings once each event is complete. These changes will occur automatically before and after each demand response event.

Electric utility companies or other program sponsors typically implement demand response programs to reduce peak demand. A demand response event occurs when the program sponsor requests that program participants with flexible load devices, like Enphase IQ Batteries, help reduce electricity demand or directly supply energy to the electric utility grid during peak demand periods. Participants in demand response programs are eligible to receive incentives in exchange for helping to reduce peak demand.

In this case, the Program administrator will make adjustments to your IQ Battery, such as discharging your battery at a specific rate, during peak demand events. Participants will be able to see when peak demand events have been scheduled in the Grid Services section of the Enphase App, typically by 6 p.m. ET on the day before the event.

Participants can expect demand response events to occur no more than 60 times a year for a maximum of three hours per event between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., from June through September each year. Once you are activated to participate in the Program, your IQ Battery will be automatically set to participate in all events unless you opt out of specific events or opt out of the Program. See the next question for details.

You can opt-out of individual events by clicking on the “Opt Out” button for an upcoming event in the Enphase App. Event opt-out steps via the Enphase App are summarized in the screenshots below.

NHCF1

Enrollment is a three-year commitment, beginning on the date of acceptance.

In the event that Eversource determines you are no longer eligible or have violated the terms of the Program, your participation will be terminated. Grounds for termination could include, participant enrolling in a conflicting program, tampering or attempting to tamper with the operation of the Program, or providing false information within the context of the Program.

If the participant withdraws or is terminated prior to three years of participation, the participant may render themself ineligible to receive the incentive, participate in the Program in the future, or participate in other programs offered by the Program sponsors

Battery-only systems or battery storage systems which are not charged by a renewable energy system are eligible to participate. However, please note that the discharge rate of any battery system may be limited by the total power export allowed by the utility interconnection agreement.

Program participants keep the functionality of their Enphase IQ Battery, including backup power, in several ways. First, the likelihood of an outage during the summer demand response season is relatively low because most power outages occur during the winter in New England.2 Second, although StormGuard will be overridden during demand response events, Eversource has advised they will not call demand response events if the weather forecast calls for a major storm or other extreme weather that could result in widespread grid outages, allowing participants to keep their batteries at a maximum state of charge in preparation for a possible outage due to extreme weather. Third, participants can opt-out of individual demand response events if they are concerned about a possible outage occurring during or after a demand response event. Finally, the program will maintain a Battery Discharge Limit of 20%, which will enable you to have a reserve of backup energy in case of a grid outage during or immediately after a demand response event.

No. Enphase offers industry-leading 10-year and 15-year battery warranties. The 10-year warranty assumes the battery system will operate up to 4,000 cycles (i.e., battery discharge events) and the 15-year warranty assumes the battery system will operate up to 6,000 cycles, which averages out to 400 cycles per year. Program participation only requires between 30-60 cycles per year, which is well below the 400 cycle per year warranty limit. This leaves plenty of additional cycles for non-Program battery operation (e.g., energy savings, backup power).

Once you are accepted as a participant in the Program, you may withdraw by emailing eversource@energyhub.com. By withdrawing, you may render yourself ineligible to receive the incentive, participate in the Program in the future, or participate in other programs offered by the Program sponsors.

Upfront incentives will be mailed to Program participants in the form of a check within approximately two weeks of being accepted into the program via your Enphase app. Batteries must be fully installed, online, and have permission to operate (PTO) from the utility to be accepted. All incentive payments are the responsibility of Eversource.

If you do not have an Enphase IQ Battery installed, the first step is to find an Enphase installer to get an accurate quote for your home energy system. Find an installer in your area here.

You are encouraged to talk with your Enphase installer about additional state and federal battery incentives that may be available. For example, Enphase battery systems qualify for the 30% Residential Clean Energy Credit – so the purchase and installation of your IQ Battery may qualify for a 30% credit on your federal taxes.

In addition, participants may be eligible to apply for a low- or zero-interest loan offered by the National Energy Improvement Fund (NEIF) for the equipment and labor costs associated with installing a battery storage system. These loans are limited and only available on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact your Enphase installer for more details.
