Frequently asked questions
When are the "whips" or DC cable adaptors (ECA-EN4-FW-10-12) necessary?

The IQ8 Commercial Microinverter has an Enphase EN4 Bulkhead for DC connection and a bulkhead adapter cable (150 mm) for EN4 to Stäubli MC4 connection in the box. If the PV modules have TE PV4S SOLARLOK connectors, you may plug them directly into the IQ8 Commercial Microinverter using the EN4 Bulkhead.

For installations where DC cables from the PV modules are unable to reach the IQ8 Commercial Microinverters, installers can order longer EN4 to Stäubli MC4 or non-terminated adapter cables. The following table lists the two available SKUs.

What is the maximum number of inverters on each side of the center-tap connector?

All QD Cable variants come with a center-tap connector positioned after every sixth Field Wireable QD Connector (male) for microinverter connection. In some sites, there could be a scenario where the starting point for a circuit is not the first connector in the circuit. Select the center-tap connector such that a maximum of nine IQ8 Commercial Microinverters are installed on each side of the center-tap connector to limit the voltage rise in the QD Cable to <1%.

The following table lists different scenarios based on the starting point of the circuit using QD Cables and the possible number of microinverters, which can be on each side of the center-tap connector.

Which cell modem should I use?

Enphase also offers many variants of the cellular modem based on the number of microinverters per system:

•  M1 radio (CELLMODEM-M1-06-SP-05) for sites less than 64 PCUs, data reporting every 6 hours.

•  C1 modem (CELLMODEM-C1-01-TM-05) for sites of any size, data reporting every 15 minutes.

•  The Integrator Kit with C4 router (available in H2 2024) for sites with multiple gateways.

How do I determine which SKU to use based on my module?

Refer to the Enphase compatibility calculator to check the compatibility of the IQ8 Commercial Microinverters with any PV module. IQ8P-3P is commonly paired with modules with power rating between 380 W to 640 W.

How many QD Center Tap Adapter Cables are necessary per branch or job? When are they necessary?

All QD Cable variants come with a center-tap connector positioned after every sixth QD connector for microinverter connection. The number of adapters used will vary with field configuration. Installers can select the center-tap connector such that a maximum of nine IQ8 Commercial Microinverters are installed on each side of the center-tap connector to limit voltage rise in the QD Cable to <1%.

If the circuit has less than nine microinverters, the circuit shall be end-terminated, leaving the center-tap connectors unused. The Center Tap Adapter Cable provision on the QD Cable is not for microinverter connection.

Which gateway do I use with a commercial and industrial (C&I) microinverter?

The IQ8P-3P and IQ8H-3P Microinverters constitute a separate commercial product line designed specifically for three-phase installations with a neutral connection (120/208 VAC Wye).

IQ Gateway Commercial 2 (ENV2-IQC2-AM3-3P) is the only gateway compatible with Enphase C&I microinverters. Note: The IQ Gateway Commercial 2 is incompatible with any other Enphase microinverter series except IQ8 Commercial Microinverters (IQ8P-3P and IQ8H-3P).

Do I need to use a Raw QD Cable? If not, what cable should I use instead of the QD Cable?

No. The Raw QD Cable is a four conductor, 12 AWG and 12 AWG Neutral, 90C-rated cable without integrated AC connectors. It can be used between separated arrays or to connect to a junction box some distance from an array.

Any UL3003-certified cable, which is correctly sized according to NEC for current capacity and length, can be used.

What is the best way to build a BOM?

Enphase offers a specialized system builder tool for commercial PV systems, which helps you view system components, system overview, and essential tips. The system builder can be accessed at https://enphase.com/installers/systems.

Can the IQ8-3P Microinverter be installed on a system with an AC-coupled battery?

Enphase has tested several types of battery systems successfully; however, each battery has site-specific configuration requirements. To discuss your use case, contact the Enphase engineering team with your project details, proposed wiring diagrams, assumed operating parameters, and utility interconnection agreement.

How do I manage and cut the QD Cable?

The Enphase QD Cable inventory management is different from Enphase IQ Cable management. The QD Cable is a four-wire 12 AWG cable with built-in, auto-phase rotation and center-tapping features. For more information about cable management, contact your distribution account manager.

Do I need to have branches where the string is divisible by 3?

No. However, power balance across the connected phases may have to be achieved based on your local utility interconnection requirements.

What is the limited warranty period for IQ8 Series Microinverters?

IQ8 Series Microinverters come with a 25-year limited warranty in North America.

Are the IQ8P-3P and IQ8H-3P high-power three-phase residential versions of the IQ8 series microinverters?

No, the IQ8P-3P and IQ8H-3P constitute a separate commercial product line designed specifically for three-phase installations only. The IQ8 Commercial Microinverters feature an entirely different form factor and mounting bracket and are only compatible with the three-phase QD Cable and IQ Commercial Gateway 2. IQ8 series microinverters used for residential purposes are only compatible with single/split-phase systems utilizing Enphase Q Cable and IQ Gateway.

How will a three-phase IQ8 Series Microinverters Enphase Energy System design differ from a three-phase IQ7+ Enphase Energy system design?
  • A three-phase IQ7+ system utilizes the IQ7+ Microinverter, Enphase Q Cable (2-wired cable) and the Enphase IQ Gateway Commercial – either standalone or as part of the Enphase Three Phase Network Protection Relay (TPNPR) to provide loss of phase detection. Phase balancing in a three-phase IQ7+ system requires allocating the branch circuits equally across the three phases in the PV aggregation panel.

  • A three-phase IQ8 Commercial microinverter system utilizes the IQ8P-3P or IQ8HC-3P microinverter, the Enphase QD Cable (4-wired cable) and the Enphase IQ Gateway Commercial 2. In no circumstance is the Enphase TPNPR required on an IQ8 Commercial PV system. The QD Cable provides Auto Phase Rotation and Neutral Sense Capabilities. Please visit the IQ8 Commercial information page for configuration diagrams.

Will the Commercial Enphase Energy System be compatible with other battery storage in the market?
  • Enphase has not evaluated nor tested the integration of the IQ8 Commercial PV System with any 3rd-party single-phase or three-phase battery solution and cannot support installations where three-phase solar PV and 3rd-party storage integration are required.

What are the features of a Commercial Enphase Energy System?
  • The Enphase IQ8 Commercial PV System is a grid-tied, three-phase, 208V PV solution that will be fully compliant with IEEE1547:2018 standards upon release. Each IQ8 Commercial microinverter, either the IQ8P-3P or IQ8HC-3P, connects to a single PV module and integrates with the Enphase IQ Commercial Gateway 2 and Enphase monitoring and analysis software. The IQ8 Commercial PV System will offer system-level rapid shutdown compliance with UL-listed PV modules; offers advanced grid functionalities, voltage and frequency ride through, and neutral sense capabilities.

Will Enphase also launch a three-phase commercial battery solution?
  • Enphase is evaluating storage solutions for three-phase applications. We look forward to providing an update in the future.
