Solar when it isn’t sunny

Obviously, the sun doesn’t shine 24/7. So what happens with your solar energy system when it’s dark or cloudy?

What happens when it’s cloudy or night-time?

Some of this depends on your system. If you have a grid-connected Enphase Energy System—that includes battery storage, you can draw power from your battery if there isn’t enough production from your solar array to power your home.

If you configure your battery to stay fully charged to protect against power outages, then you may end up using grid power to offset your solar at night or on overcast days.

If you have an off-grid system, you’ll need to rely on backup batteries or a generator at night or when your solar panels aren’t producing enough power for your home.

With the right configuration, an Enphase Energy System can ensure your home remains powered, no matter the circumstances.

How does solar work in extreme weather?

Let’s start with heat and cold.

Solar panels can produce power in a wide range of temperatures. Interestingly, colder temperatures can improve panel efficiency. On a crisp winter day, solar panels perform more efficiently due to lower cell temperature. Even light snow doesn’t stop solar production—sunlight can still reach the panels through thin layers of snow. And as the panels absorb solar energy, they warm up and melt the snow, thus increasing production once the snow is gone. Wind also helps improve solar production because wind chill disperses heat and lowers the panel temperature.

Hot summer days, on the other hand, bring slightly reduced efficiency due to higher temperatures. But more hours of summer sunlight usually result in more energy production overall.

Extreme weather

What about extreme weather? Windstorms and hurricanes can knock out power from the grid. But if you have a smart Enphase solar and battery backup system, it’s possible you could run your home for days without grid power by automatically managing your power use.

Enphase offers innovative solar technology that allows your panels to begin generating again when there’s enough light in the morning. If your system also has backup batteries, your solar will begin to charge them when panel output exceeds your home’s power usage, even if your battery is depleted.

Advanced energy management software that comes with every Enphase Energy System can also manage power demand and monitor battery reserves, ensuring that critical needs like refrigerators, lights, and your internet connection are powered.

Enphase has a highly trained installer network that can help design a system integrating panels, backup batteries, and generators to provide you with the highest resilience to extreme weather. In fact, Enphase systems are so resilient that our microinverter technology is recommended by FEMA to withstand extreme weather.

By choosing Enphase, you’re investing in a solar system that can help support your energy needs year-round, rain or shine.
