Maintaining your Enphase Energy System

Enphase engineers its system components to be simple, durable, and last for years, so the amount of maintenance to your system should be minimal. But there are a few things you should do periodically to ensure optimal performance.

Regular system checks

Check your Enphase App regularly to make sure your panels and batteries are firing on all cylinders. Your Enphase microinverters are designed for long life with little maintenance, but if you notice a drop in production not related to cloud cover or shading, there could be an issue that needs to be addressed. If that happens, contact Enphase Support or your Enphase-certified installer for help.

It's the same for your batteries: if you notice a change in charging or discharging, contact your installer or Enphase Support to help troubleshoot the issue. And as a best practice, you should regularly make sure that the area around where your batteries are installed is kept clean, dry, and uncluttered.

Cleaning your solar energy system

Generally, the only regular maintenance your system will need is panel cleaning. Over time, they can get dirty from rain residue, bird droppings, airborne dirt, debris, or in some areas, wildfire ash, and that dirt can impede their production.

If it’s safe, you can go up on your roof to clean off your panels. Be sure to use a soft brush or microfiber cleaner and soapy water. Dish soap and some automotive soaps work well. You may also be able to simply hose off your panels from ground level if they’re accessible that way. Your installer should be able to provide you with some best practices for panel cleaning that will help you avoid damage or potentially voiding your panel warranty.

Always clean your panels either on an overcast day, early in the morning, or into the evening when the panels are cool.

If your roof has a steep pitch, your panels are installed at height, or you just aren’t comfortable going up on your roof, you may want to hire a professional cleaning service. Your installer may be able to recommend one if cleaning isn’t something they normally do.

What happens if you need to re-roof?

There may come a time when your roof surface needs repairs or replacement. If so, your installer may need to work with your roofing company and come out to remove your panels and conduit so your home can be re-roofed.

This will result in your Enphase Energy System being offline for the time it takes to pull the system, re-roof, and re-install the panels and conduit once the roof is done. You may also incur additional costs of $2,000 to $4,000 beyond the cost of the re-roofing.
