Solar system safety

Performance and reliability are only half the story. Powerful energy producers like solar panels and batteries also need to be safe for years to come. At all times, Enphase emphasizes safety during product development, testing, and installation.

Microinverters and safer solar panels

Enphase IQ8 Microinverters eliminate the risk of DC arc fault fires from high-voltage direct current power.

Unlike other systems, Enphase solar never contains high-voltage DC; the IQ8 Microinverters installed on every solar panel convert the DC generated by the panel to alternating current (AC) like you use in your home, right at the panel. And AC doesn’t arc. Plus, Enphase Energy Systems have the additional safety of built-in rapid shutdown so the system can be de-energized quickly, minimizing fire danger and allowing first responders to safely address any emergency. Another safety assurance is the fact that we put our equipment through thousands of hours of testing to find and eliminate faults before they even get into the field.

In addition to our own testing, Enphase microinverters, batteries, EV chargers, and communications devices go through extensive third-party testing by respected organizations like Underwriters Laboratories to attain the highest levels of safety certifications.

Battery safety

Battery chemistry, installation location, and potential for leakage are factors that affect the safety and longevity of your solar battery.

Enphase IQ Batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry instead of lithium nickel manganese cobalt, or NMC. LFP chemistry is known for its safety, stability, and low fire danger, and is often the preferred battery chemistry of local authorities and fire departments. This makes LFP batteries like the Enphase IQ Battery ideal for installation inside your home, whether they’re in your basement, garage, or a utility room. Their passive cooling system is also simpler than other batteries, with no moving parts; this eliminates some potential failure points and makes them safer and easier to maintain.

Fully certified for all-weather operation if you choose to install them outdoors, the safety of Enphase IQ Batteries is also bolstered by the fact that they operate with low-voltage DC power, avoiding the dangers that come with high-voltage DC power. So an Enphase system isn’t just sustainable. It’s safe and reliable, too.

One other bonus: they don’t contain any cobalt, which has few sources and is often harvested using questionable mining practices. That means the LFP chemistry is also more sustainable at the source.

Backed by best-in-class warranties

We’ve talked about all the testing we put our components through to ensure they work reliably year after year. What we haven’t mentioned is that many of our residential and commercial components, including our IQ Batteries, are now produced in plants in Texas.  As a result, we're also supporting local jobs and strengthening domestic manufacturing in the United States.

Given all the upfront work we do to ensure quality and production, it’s easy for us to also back our components with some of the best warranties in the industry.

Most solar panels come with 25-year warranties, and we match that standard with our Enphase IQ Microinverters, which are covered by a 25-year limited warranty. While string inverters typically come with 10- to 12-year warranties and tend to fail within 15 years, our microinverters are built to last well beyond their warranty period.

Alongside our microinverters, the IQ Battery and IQ Combiner (which includes the IQ Gateway) are part of the 4th-generation Enphase Energy System and are backed by a 15-year limited warranty. That’s up to 6,000 charge/discharge cycles for the battery, compared to 10-year warranties offered by most competitors. Plus, our EV chargers are also covered by industry-leading warranties, giving you added peace of mind.

Altogether, the care we take in manufacturing combines with superior warranties to protect your investment and ensure long-term reliability you can count on. For more details, be sure to visit our warranty page.
